Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How much power does the lighthouse have, and can we charge cell phones?
A: The lighthouse is operated off a bank of solar panels and batteries. We have a large inverter that provides 120V electricity. There is enough battery power to power the lights, TV and charge cell phones/computers. There is not enough power to operate items such as hair dryers and flat irons.
Q: What items are in the kitchen?
A: The kitchen is equipped with a small refrigerator, microwave, camp-style (Coleman) coffee maker, gas oven and cook top. We provide paper plates and plastic cups. We also have 4-plates, 2-mugs, steak knives, one medium size pot, medium size frying pan, forks, knives, salt, pepper and seasonings.
Q: Are people allowed to board the lighthouse during our stay?
A: Due to liability reasons, guests are not allowed to invite anyone on to the lighthouse at anytime during their stay. The U.S. Coast Guard has right of access at any time.
Q: Does the lighthouse still have a light and foghorn?
A: The lighthouse is still a fully active aid to navigation. The Coast Guard has a modern optic in the lantern room that operates from dusk to dawn. In 2013, the foghorn was removed.
Q: Is there WiFi or Cable TV?
A: The lighthouse is not equipped with WiFi or Cable. There is a DVD player available, and local TV stations.
Q: How long does it take to get to the lighthouse?
A: The lighthouse is located about 1,500 feet off shore. We launch from the Borden Light Marina (1 Ferry Street Fall River, MA), and the shuttle usually takes about 5-minutes.
Q: Can we go swimming off the lighthouse?
A: We highly recommend that no one attempts to swim from the lighthouse. The light is located at the mouth of the Taunton River. During an outgoing tide, it's not uncommon for the current to exceed 7-kts. Also, there are large rocks all around the base of the lighthouse.
Q: Can we bring beer or wine with us?
A: Guests are welcome to bring alcoholic beverages with them. We request that no one smokes at the lighthouse due to fire logistics.
Q: What if there is an emergency, who do we call?
A: If there is a medical emergency, dial 911 (The lighthouse has excellent cell coverage). Fall River has excellent police and fire officers through their harbormaster program. Also, call the person who dropped you off at the lighthouse. If there is a boat emergence, use the Coast Guard radio on site (Channel 16) to notify the U.S. Coast Guard.
Q: Are we allowed to take picture of the inside and access the lantern room?
A: Our guests are welcome to take as many pictures as they would like. Guests are also welcome to access the lantern room where the active light is located. (Sunsets are amazing from the lantern room)
Q: Are we allowed to keep a boat at the lighthouse?
A: Boats are not allowed to be tied off to the lighthouse or anchored. The lighthouse is located in a navigable channel and anchoring is not advised. Transient slips are available at the Borden Light Marina 508-678-7547.
Q: Does the lighthouse float?
A: The lighthouse rests firmly upon the bottom of the bay. It doesn't "rock" around with the waves, and we do not have the ability to bring the lighthouse to shore.
Q: Can we bring a small cooler?
A: You're more than welcome to bring a small cooler. Smaller the better, as we will need to carry it up the ladder.
Q: Is the power plant behind the lighthouse Nuclear?
A: The Brayton Point Power Plant was decommissioned in May 2017. The plant was coal fired and the cooling towers were added in 2010 to eliminate hot water from entering the bay and damaging the ecosystem.
